That's it.
America gets what it wants.
Best of luck assh0les.
What we need is another 8 terms of republican presidents and then I can just die knowing that things are going to go in a predictable direction.
I'm tired of holding out hope for America and it's 'potential'.
Let's face it we're a bunch of goddamn idiots, we have only the capacity to decline.
We have no long- or short-term plan of any kind that I'm aware of. It's impossible for us to engage in civil engineering of any scale greater than 5 years because those in power will not benefit from the eventual positive result.
We cling to superstition in the face of overwhelming, measurable reality.
Astronomy? The Pope? Oh yeah, he represents the invisible man in the sky. I forgot.
The class divide seems to be widening to me.
How many people do you know who are in economic decline? How many are ascending?
Civil war? Totalitarianism? Mass indentured servitude? Never ending war? Plague? I can't imagine a positive outcome for this place any longer.
How can anyone who isn't self-deceiving pretend that soon we will have an improved society in which an educated electorate brings about rapid change in free elections when it's clear that the winner will always be the guy who simply looks more presidential? Defined here as a new universal constant embodied by Martin Sheen.
When will we pass an amendment stating that medical treatment, housing, food, water, and a free chance at education and betterment are assured to all.
When will we extract from the wealthy the dues they evade and yet are still permitted to leach off the society?
Now that is a rant.
Can anyone present a compelling rationale for improvement of any kind?

It's not about "America" you geocentric so and so... it is about humans. Get enough of them together and make them prosperous enough and this is just the way it goes. Barring some change to human nature (like Vinge's IA), I expect we will do as humans have done before us and putter along ignoring consequences until there is some major collapse. At that point sufficiently-motivated and positioned individuals will reorganize the rest and the humans will start the process again. Oh, and eventually the Sun will destroy the Earth and that will be that. All we can hope for is some interesting forms of reorganization in the meantime.
If it is any consolation, you weren't helping anyway, assuming you were referring to the political process. As a member of society, on the other hand, you probably do help (in ways you don't place any value on, but which other people around you do appreciate) and probably won't be able to avoid helping in the future, cuz you are just that kind of guy. So there.
True about the America vs. Earth thing. Also, the human nature thing. And yup, major collapse is needed around here for any real change. No, the political solution wasn't really what I meant about me "helping". I vote, but let's face it, I'm outnumbered. I really meant the whole trying to convince people thing I've always tried. Maybe I could get a taser? There are some intractable nitwits I know who clearly should know better but just love towing the line instead of using any kind of critical thought. For example... There will always be poor people so we needn't try to improve anything. The weak and unlucky don't deserve protection - ala Darwin. I point out that evolution doesn't apply in any way unless it affects reproduction and that's a pretty shitty way to be in any case to any upper mammal.
Also, 'violence is productive' is a big argument I get. As if there were a tangible threat of some kind.
I will fight the good long battle though because they's all stupid as hell but I may have to go on a killing spree. Perhaps a run for public office? "Vote for Ken and he won't go on a killing spree!" Like most politicians though I will not deliver on my promises. MuuuuHaHaHa!

That would be a good time to taser them, since they are basically asking for it.
The problem I have in considering Solutions is that most of the situations we are trying to ameliorate are due to previous Solutions. It is like applying an adhesive bandage over a series of adhesive bandages, when the real problem is that the wound isn't being fixed by adhesive bandages. It gets very confusing for me if I try to get excited about Solutions. Trying to do more responsible stuff in the conduct of my daily life is easier for me to wrap my head around, though, and I would feel remiss if I didn't make that effort.
